As a leading voice in Namibia’s paint industry, Sharon Cloete, NEO Paints’ Colour Specialist, has her finger on the pulse of colour trends. We sat down with Sharon to reflect on 2024’s standout shades and explore what’s on the horizon for 2025.
2024 in Review: A Year of Modern Classics and Eco-Friendly Choices
According to Sharon, 2024 saw a notable preference for neutral tones with a modern twist. “Greys were incredibly popular,” she shared. “They offered a sleek, contemporary look and were often paired with accents like navy blue to create a striking balance.”
Namibians also embraced global trends while staying true to local needs. “Our consumers focus on longevity, especially considering our harsh sun and the importance of eco-friendly choices,” Sharon explained. “Shades like greens, browns, greys, and tans – inspired by Namibia’s natural landscapes – were consistently favoured. Our standard colours, such as Gemsbok, Kalahari, and Spitzkoppe, remained fan favourites.”
When it came to finishes, practicality took precedence. “NEO Dur Semi-Matt was a go-to,” Sharon noted. “Its washable and durable properties made it ideal for both homes and businesses.”
2025: A Year of Sustainable Elegance
Globally, 2025 paint trends are expected to lean into eco-conscious and natural aesthetics – a direction Namibia is already aligned with. “Namibia is on par with these trends,” Sharon said confidently.
She predicts that colours reflecting the natural environment will continue to resonate with Namibian consumers. “With the global climate crisis, people are drawn to shades that blend seamlessly with nature,” she explained. Textures will also play a role, with products like NEO Natural textured paint gaining popularity. “It’s low-maintenance, has a natural colour palette, and features a medium-sandy texture, perfect for creating timeless spaces.”
To incorporate these trends in a lasting way, Sharon suggests focusing on accent walls or specific areas like entertainment zones and exteriors. “Textured feature walls are a great way to stay trendy without risking a dated look,” she advised.
Colour Confidence: Insights for Businesses
While personal preference plays a significant role in colour choices, Sharon sees bold colours making their way into commercial spaces. “Businesses are aligning bold colours with their brands – think of Groove Mall or NamPost,” she noted. For those looking to stay ahead, she recommends considering the emotions a space should evoke. “Once you have a palette in mind, it’s easier to align with trendy hues within the same family.”
Local industries are also innovating with colour. Sharon highlighted tourism, retail, and hospitality as leaders in using paint trends to enhance spaces. “As travel picks up, lodges are incorporating more adventurous palettes. Even hospitals are moving towards a modern, colourful approach, and business schools are following suit.”
Unforgettable Designs: Standout Projects of 2024
Reflecting on her work, Sharon shared a few standout projects. “One private home gave me the creative freedom to play with whites and greys for a sleek, modern feel,” she said. Another highlight was the GIPF Ondangwa building by Kerry McNamara Architects. “We used the brand colours boldly to complement the glass features and metal structures. The design, executed to perfection, truly makes a statement.”
Sharon’s Top Tips for 2025 Trends
For those hesitant to experiment, Sharon’s advice is clear: “Don’t be afraid of colour. How you use it is what makes the difference. Collaborating with a NEO Paints colour specialist can help bring your vision to life – it’s a value-added service that many clients don’t realize is available.”
